Claude
By Anthropic · General-purpose AI assistant
An AI assistant built around careful reasoning and long-form writing, rather than speed or spectacle.
Our take —
Best for long documents, code review, and careful analysis. Less suited to image generation or the widest plugin ecosystem, where ChatGPT and Gemini pull ahead.
Overview
Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, available through a web app, desktop and mobile apps, and a developer API. It’s built to hold long conversations and long documents in context, write and edit at length without losing the thread, and reason through multi-step problems — including code — with visible, careful steps.
Where it distinguishes itself from more general assistants is tone: Claude tends toward measured, qualified answers rather than confident-sounding guesses, and its “Artifacts” feature lets you build and preview a document, chart, or small app inline as you work, rather than jumping between chat and a separate tool.
Pros and cons
What it does well
- Handles long documents and long conversations without losing context
- Strong at multi-step reasoning and reviewing or writing code
- Measured, qualified answers rather than overconfident ones
- Artifacts let you build and preview docs, code, or small apps inline
- Available on web, desktop, mobile, and via API for developers
Where it falls short
- No native image generation — you’ll need a separate tool for visuals
- Free plan has tighter daily usage limits than some rivals
- Smaller third-party plugin and integration ecosystem than ChatGPT
- Voice mode and multimodal features are less developed
Pricing
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited daily messages, access to a capable model, file uploads |
| Pro Most popular | $20/mo | Much higher usage limits, access to the most capable models, early features |
| Team / Enterprise | Custom | Central billing, admin controls, higher usage caps across a team |
